Webinar on Thursday, 14 March 15:00 – 16:00 CET First-hand experience from the first three months into maritime ETS. Join our webinar. Since January 2024, shipowners must surrender EU allowances for every ton of MRV-verified CO2 emissions to adhere to the EU ETS. This has far-reaching implications for shipping companies, demanding a keen understanding and efficient management of the system to ensure compliance. Join us for an insightful webinar where we explore the practical lessons learned in the first three months since the implementation of the EU ETS for the maritime sector. Featuring expert insights from Fleettracker, Swiss Climate, and…

How to get a customized VMS for your Chartering & Operations team?

How to get a customized VMS for your Chartering & Operations team?

Making software for a core process like chartering and operations is near to the chicken-and-egg problem: Whatever you add to the software, the next customer has more, different requirements. Different vessel types, cargoes, tramp, semi-liner, parcelling – shipping is a complex system with a lot of niches. To support data-driven decisions, data integration via APIs becomes more and more important. All in all, customization of Voyage Management Solutions is a key for future competiveness. But how to get a system that matches 100% the company’s requirements? We are now offering a combination of license and software development. Our “CharterWorks 2024…

How much does EU ETS actually cost? Do you really know?

How much does EU ETS actually cost? Do you really know?

Until now, if necessary, charterers could simply estimate freight using a calculator. Simply get the value from the distance table, select the speed of the ship and consumption, calculate travel time and fuel costs, add port costs on top, 10% sea margin, profit and commission, done. Since the beginning of 2024, things have become more complicated. As soon as you reach Europe, you have to compensate for CO2. For 2024 it is 40% of the amount emitted. In 2025, 70% will be charged, then 100%. Calls from non-EU countries to Europe and vice versa are only being calculated at 50%,…

„Jan, this ETS stuff is not logical at all. How are charterers supposed to calculate their CO2 costs with this strange EU regulation?”

„Jan, this ETS stuff is not logical at all. How are charterers supposed to calculate their CO2 costs with this strange EU regulation?”

From time to time there are these “IT meets reality” conflicts. Recently I had one again. I sat with our developer about the ETS calculation. And they were frustrated. Developers like logic. And logic rules are rare. At least in shipping. (I just remember the ship working hours regulations years ago not taking time zone changes into account). We have implemented the CO2 calculation for a voyage. So far everything is good. You can see the costs directly below your profit. Of course we apply all the rules. 50% for foreign to the EU and v.v. , 100% for EU-EU….

ETS for biofuels in shipping? Things are getting more complex…

ETS for biofuels in shipping? Things are getting more complex…

Starting next year, you will have to take CO2 emissions into account as soon as a ship calls at a European port. You need to know the CO2 emissions in order to buy the corresponding allowances (EUAs). There is a standardized CO2 emission factor for each fuel type (HFO, MDO, etc.). For example, 1 ton of HFO produces 3.114 ton of CO2, 1 ton of MDO produces 3.205 ton of CO2, etc. To estimate the CO2 emissions of a planned trip, simply multiply the amount of fuel by the emission factor. So far, so simple. Now biofuels are coming onto…

Webinar: From e-mail to fixture – how to make more money in less time in chartering by using algorithms

Webinar: From e-mail to fixture – how to make more money in less time in chartering by using algorithms

Webinar with LangTec and Herberg Systems. Employees in chartering often read hundreds of emails every day. Modern algorithms can now automatically convert emails into datasets that can be used for voyage calculation in some few seconds. You can directly calculate incoming emails and return with a quotation in no time. We developed a solution that already achieved more than 95% accuracy for break bulk cargo inquiries, but also C/Ps and other documents. The code can read text, PDFs, Exel Sheet and Word documents and extract datasets of cargo inquiries. We give you an insight of what we already can do…

EU ETS is coming in shipping – How much CO2 you need to compensate for 2024?

EU ETS is coming in shipping – How much CO2 you need to compensate for 2024?

If you are in shipping, you know what this is about. EU ETS stands for European Emissions Trading System and makes polluters pay for their greenhouse gas emissions. EUAs are European Emission Allowances and are a kind of certificates. One EUA entitles the holder to emit one ton of carbon dioxide. The price of 1 mt of CO2 is about 80 Euros today. From next year on, shipping companies need to compensate CO2 emissions in EUAs. Chartering companies will have to provide the appropriate number of EUAs for the voyages they are responsible for. Thus – EUAs become another new…
